Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló Receives Senator Elizabeth Warren in San Juan
January 22, 2019 – Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló today received U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren in La Fortaleza, the Governor’s Executive Mansion in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, to discuss pressing matters pertaining Puerto Rico’s recovery and reconstruction after the disastrous passage of hurricane María through Puerto Rico in 2017.
“I am grateful for Senator Warren’s commitment to the people of Puerto Rico,” said Governor Ricardo Rosselló, “especially in light of recent events that indicate that the U.S. government response was insufficient given the magnitude of the catastrophe we faced.”
Recent reporting by news organizations indicate that the Trump administration is considering redirecting funds earmarked for Puerto Rico’s reconstruction to build a barrier in the U.S. southern border.
Rosselló also took the opportunity to express his optimism in the 116th Congress and highlighted the fact that key members on both chambers have been actively supporting measures to aid Puerto Rico’s recovery and have initiated legislative action to prevent funds destined to Puerto Rico from being used for other purposes.
“Senator Warren’s letter to Mick Mulvaney, President Trump’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, was an exemplary act of legislative checks on the executive branch. I encourage her to keep fighting on behalf of 3.2 million Americans that do not have the right to vote in federal elections,” added Ricardo Rosselló.
