Governor Wanda Vázquez starts meetings in Washington DC
(September 9, 2019, Washington DC) - Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced began her day today holding a series of meetings, with the purpose of restoring the Puerto Rican government credibility with federal authorities, as well as ensuring the disbursement of funds from reconstruction, and highlight the current economic development of the island.
Vázquez will meet with officials from the US Department of Health to discuss Medicare and Medicaid funds, as well as other health-related programs. Moreover she will also meet with staff of the US Department of Education, with whom she plans to talk about priority issues for the proper functioning of Puerto Rico’s school system.
The Governor aims to join efforts to direct major projects for Puerto Rico, so she has on her agenda to meet with the Secretary of the US Department of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin, as well as with the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Development Urban, Ben Carson. In addition, she will hold conferences with members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regarding the Island's recovery efforts following the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
“The main purpose of this visit to the federal capital is to restore relations with federal entities that are key in the disbursement of funds for the recovery of Puerto Rico and the projects that allow the social and economic development of the Island. We are focused on improving the credibility of Puerto Rico before the United States Congress, as well as creating alliances to develop projects that improve the quality of life of Puerto Ricans,” said Vázquez.
On the other hand, the Governor will meet with Puerto Rican congressmen José Serrano and Nydia Velázquez, with Democrats Darren Soto and Stephany Murphy, as well as with Republican lawmakers Rick Scott and Rob Bishop, among others.
The Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA), Jennifer Storipan, will also participate in the meetings of the Governor, while the Commissioner, Jenniffer González will accompany her on some of her visits.
The Secretary of Housing of Puerto Rico, Fernando Gil, will also join forces with the Governor; as well as the Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority (AAFAF, by its Spanish acronym), Omar Marrero, the Secretary of the Department of Health, Dr. Rafael Rodríguez; the Secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Education, Eligio Hernández; Elí Díaz, government representative before the Financial Oversight and Management Board; the Secretary of the Department of the Treasury, Francisco Parés, and Ottmar Cháves, Executive Director of the Central Office of Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience, among others.
